The Traitors: Prime Video India Unveils Major Unscripted Original

Prime Video India has officially announced the premiere date for ‘The Traitors,’ a high-stakes reality series hosted by acclaimed filmmaker Karan Johar. This marks the streaming platform’s most ambitious unscripted original to date, setting the stage for a major new addition to its content lineup.

The Indian adaptation of the globally acclaimed IDTV format will feature 20 celebrities competing in a series of intense challenges designed to test trust, betrayal, and strategic thinking. The show, produced by BBC Studios India Productions in collaboration with All3Media International, represents a significant step in Prime Video India’s expansion into reality television.

New episodes will air every Thursday on the platform, with the first season set to debut on June 12. The series promises a blend of drama, suspense, and high-stakes gameplay, with contestants vying for a substantial cash prize and the title of ultimate winner.

Nikhil Madhok, head of originals at Prime Video India, emphasized the platform’s commitment to unscripted content. ‘Prime Video has consistently been home to some of the biggest and most beloved scripted shows in the country. Now, we’re making a bold leap as we scale our unscripted content slate with our biggest reality series yet – The Traitors,’ Madhok said. ‘Packed with drama, manipulation, suspenseful gameplay, and unexpected twists, the show is mounted on a grand scale with high production values.’

The choice of Karan Johar as host was praised for his ability to create tension and drive the narrative. ‘Johar’s presence adds a unique energy to this volatile mix of 20 celebrities, each vying for a massive cash prize and the title of ultimate winner,’ Madhok added.

‘The Traitors’ has become one of the fastest-growing reality formats worldwide, with over 35 adaptations across more than 30 countries. The BAFTA and Emmy Award-winning format challenges contestants to identify traitors among their group while competing for a significant cash prize.

Sabrina Duguet, executive VP APAC at All3Media International, highlighted India’s growing appetite for reality programming. ‘India is one of the most dynamic and exciting markets in the world, with an audience base that’s highly receptive to reality shows,’ Duguet said. ‘The Indian adaptation of The Traitors offers this audience high-calibre celebrities and intense drama, all wrapped up in a thriller-esque gameplay.’

BBC Studios India Productions executive producer Neha Khurana emphasized the psychological elements that have made the format successful globally. ‘The Traitors has captivated audiences worldwide across ages and languages with its bold, dramatic, and psychological gameplay,’ Khurana said. ‘With an all-celebrity cast and jaw-dropping twists, The Traitors is an unmissable treat for fans of high-stakes reality entertainment.’

The announcement follows Prime Video India’s successful original series including ‘Paatal Lok,’ ‘Mirzapur,’ and ‘The Family Man,’ showcasing the platform’s commitment to local content production. The Indian adaptation of The Traitors streams from June 12, offering fans a new addition to the streaming landscape.
