Key Maoist Leader Basavaraju Killed in Chhattisgarh Encounter, 26 Others Eliminated
Chhattisgarh police confirmed the death of Nambala Keshava Rao, alias Basavaraju, the topmost leader of the CPI (Maoist) in a major encounter in Narayanpur, along with 26 other Maoist operatives. The operation, conducted by the state police’s District Reserve Guard (DRG), took place in Boter village and the jungles of Lekawada, resulting in the seizure of a significant amount of modern weapons and explosives.
Basavaraju, a 70-year-old founder member of the CPI (Maoist), was a key figure in the organization, having been part of its top decision-making bodies such as the politburo, central committee, and central military commission. Known for his operational expertise, he was often referred to as the ‘backbone of the Naxal movement’ by Home Minister Amit Shah.
The encounter marked a significant victory against Maoist activities in the region, with the security forces achieving a major breakthrough in their long-standing battle against the insurgents. Home Minister Amit Shah praised the ‘brave’ security forces and agencies, highlighting the success of the operation as a major setback for the Maoist movement.
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai also commended the DRG personnel for their bravery, noting that more surrenders were expected. The DRG, composed largely of surrendered Maoists, has an advantage in understanding the terrain and operational tactics of the insurgents.
Basavaraju, an engineer and former student of REC (now NIT), Warangal, was an ‘operations’ man who advocated for military-style assaults and extreme violence. His leadership was characterized by a focus on strategic planning and the use of technology in combat operations.
The operation, which took place over 72 hours, was preceded by extensive planning over 15 days. Police sources indicated that Basavaraju was among a group of top Maoist functionaries in the Abujhmarh region, protected by PLGA cadres and senior Marh division members. The DRG teams from Narayanpur, Dantewada, Bijapur, and Kondagaon were involved in the operation.
The encounter began with gunfights in a dense jungle area, approximately 15-20 km from Orchha. The Maoists eventually retreated, and the guns fell silent. The police stated that several other senior-level Maoist cadres were either killed or seriously injured during the operation. Details of the encounter would be made available after the troops returned, which is expected within 24 hours.
Following the operation, the government reiterated its commitment to eliminating Maoism and ensuring a life of peace and progress for the people of India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his support for the security forces, highlighting the importance of their efforts in maintaining national security.
